Effects of Untreated Hearing Loss

We might think of untreated hearing loss as simply missing sounds, but the reality is more complex than that. Leaving hearing loss untreated can affect our lives in a variety of ways, from our connections with others to our balance systems. The good news is that treating hearing loss reduces your risk for these symptoms, and ENT and Allergy Center is here to partner with you every step of your hearing care journey.

Social Isolation

If it’s difficult to hear and communicate with others, it makes sense that you might withdraw from social activities and conversation. This can result in feelings of loneliness and isolation. A study of older women found that higher levels of hearing loss were associated with increased odds of isolation.

Cognitive Decline

A 2022 study of older adults in the U.S. found that while moderate to severe hearing loss was associated with a higher prevalence of dementia compared with healthy hearing, using hearing aids reduced the prevalence of dementia.

Mental Health

Older adults with hearing loss are more likely to experience depression than those with healthy hearing, mainly because of the isolation and loneliness associated with hearing loss. A 2019 study of 115,000 Medicare participants over 66 indicated patients who received hearing aids for newly diagnosed hearing loss had a reduced rate of dementia, depression or anxiety diagnoses over the following three years when compared to study participants who did not treat their diagnosed hearing loss.

Increased Risks of Falls

Hearing and balance share a common nerve pathway from the ear to the brain. One study of adults ages 40-69 found that going from healthy hearing to mild hearing loss tripled the chance of falling.
